Integrating Algol
Transmuting the Monster to Muse
When I first began practicing astrological magic, I stayed away from Algol. There was so much discourse and anger around feminine issues I figured it was best for me as a straight white male to keep a respectful distance.
Everything changed when I was out witnessing the Perseid meteors and I had an insight that the meteors shooting out from that constellation kind of reminded me of the divine energy which shot out of Medusa’s blood in the form of Pegasus. At that moment I was contacted by Medusa, congratulated for my insight and invited to work with her.
The goddess that I came to know has been one of the most loving presences I have ever encountered. Deep in the remote wilderness of North Carolina, foraging and wandering, she would visit me in the sacred silence of those places. And she remains a loving and protective presence in my life to this day.
That is why, earlier this year, I offered my readers and subscribers an opportunity to connect with her ceremonially and even fashioned talismans which some of them now have.
In that election with Venus conjunct Algol, the Moon was applying to sextile Jupiter before conjoining Venus and then Algol. Thus the resulting talismans carry the classic protective, reversing, and strengthening virtues of Algol plus a benefic, gentler catalytic quality. Venus brings the original priestess beauty and relational harmony. Jupiter (a traditional mitigator for Algol’s Saturnian heaviness) adds benevolence, expansion, and wisdom.
This configuration supports not just outward protection but an inner process of integration—helping the wearer transmute lower/stratum energies into higher expression without being overwhelmed.
Today’s New Moon conjunct Algol within a degree offers another powerful opportunity to consider the possibilities for integrating the energies of this powerful star and goddess.

Contemplation for Today’s New Moon Conjunct Algol
The fixed star Algol (Caput Algol, β Persei) carries the mythic charge of Medusa: a once-beautiful priestess of Venusian grace, violated and transformed into a monstrous, petrifying force. Traditionally classified with Jupiter-Saturn qualities (heavy, intense, sometimes destructive), its deeper story reveals a full spectrum.
From luminous beauty and vital feminine power (Venusian origins)
Through the raw, animalistic shadow—rage, instinct, trauma, and lower-chakra energies that can overwhelm or “petrify”
To transcendence: from her blood sprang Pegasus, the winged horse of inspiration and ascent. Her severed head became the protective aegis on Athena’s and Zeus’s shields—turning the monstrous power into a ward that protects rather than destroys.
This is not a binary of “monster or muse,” but an array or stratum of expressions. The Medusa/Algol archetype shows us that what petrifies us can, through conscious work, become a source of fierce protection, creative flight, and integrated power.
Integration is possible. Jungian analyst Katherine Olivetti and others describe this as an alchemical process: we confront the raw libido/energy indirectly (Perseus’s mirror-shield = reflection, awareness, containment), hold the tension, and allow transformation. The goal is not to destroy the “monster” but to channel it upward—grounding the lower energies while accessing the higher, winged gifts.
For this New Moon, consider journaling or meditating on:
Where in your life are you encountering “Medusa” energy (overwhelm, rage, beauty turned terrifying, or shadow material)?
What would it mean to meet it with the mirror of consciousness rather than direct gaze?
How might you invite the Pegasus aspect—creative inspiration, transcendence, or protected strength?
Meeting Medusa with the Mirror of Consciousness (Instead of Direct Gaze)
The myth’s key: Perseus doesn’t look straight at her—he uses the reflective shield. This symbolizes reflection, mediation, and safe witnessing rather than raw confrontation that could overwhelm or freeze you.
Ideas & Activities:
Journaling with the Mirror Prompt: Write about a current area of intensity (rage, fear, grief, addictive pattern, creative block, or relational trigger). Instead of diving straight into the emotion, ask:
“If I were observing this from a slight distance, like through a mirror or a camera lens, what do I notice? What patterns, images, or earlier memories arise?”
This creates psychological distance and often reveals the “beautiful priestess” underneath the monster (e.g., the original vulnerability or vital energy that got wounded).Active Imagination (Jungian style): Sit quietly, close your eyes, and visualize meeting a Medusa-like figure. Keep an imaginary reflective surface between you. Dialogue with her: “What are you protecting? What do you need me to see?” Record what emerges without judgment. Many people find the figure softens or reveals gifts when approached this way.
Somatic “Mirror” Practice: When you feel the petrifying energy rising (tight chest, frozen, flooded), pause and name it neutrally: “This is Medusa energy moving through me.” Place a hand on your body, breathe, and describe the sensations as if observing them in a mirror. This prevents dissociation or acting out while honoring the lower-chakra intensity.
Art as Mirror: Draw, paint, or collage the feeling without trying to make it “nice.” Use a literal mirror in the process—create while occasionally looking at your own face, reminding yourself you are the witness, not the monster.
Inviting the Pegasus Aspect
(Creative Inspiration, Transcendence, Protected Strength)
Pegasus springs from Medusa’s blood the moment she is “dealt with” consciously. The winged horse represents libido freed into upward, creative, and protective movement.Ideas & Activities:
Creative Release Ritual: After doing some mirror work on a difficult emotion, immediately move into a creative act—free-write, dance, make music, or move your body as if the energy is now growing wings. Ask: “If this intensity could fly, what would it create?” Even 10–15 minutes of unstructured expression can birth surprising insights or art.
Pegasus Meditation / Visualization: Imagine the blood of the confronted Medusa becoming light or liquid gold, rising and forming wings. Feel yourself riding or becoming Pegasus—strong, elevated, seeing from a higher vantage. End by visualizing the aegis (Medusa’s head as shield) around you or your loved ones for protected strength.
Embodied Protection Practice: Choose a small object or gesture that represents your personal “aegis.” While holding or wearing your Algol talisman (if you have one), consciously dedicate its power: “I use this energy to protect what is sacred to me and to turn raw force into wisdom.” Some people wear the talisman during challenging conversations or creative work as a reminder.
Nature or Movement Invocations: Go outside (Taurus New Moon favors earthy grounding). Walk, run, or ride (if you have access to horses) while contemplating what needs to be transcended. Or c
Create a small altar with symbols of beauty (Venus), intensity (snake/serpent imagery), and flight (feathers, winged images). Say a prayer for all aspects of Medusa to gently begin to be more integrated in your being.

Thanks for your creative prompts (as always) seeing ourselves in a mirror is true magic, one which many indigenous peoples traded their sacred objects for.
Snakes are highly aware beings with sensitivities we may never truly realize. Born from eggs (like birds) they resonate deeply with mother Earth who they see and feel through their bones.
It's a complex story this one about Medusa, which maybe wisely, you side stepped for a while, as Demeter too was abused by Poseidon.
There is a lot of dirty laundry we humans carry for the Gods, but looking at them through a mirror, maybe allows for compassion. ( Now there's a pun, if ever there was one; com (with) passion...compassion for our plight and thanks for the light. What we resist, persists.
Thanks Gary for your magic.
Another wonderful post Gary. Thanks for the seeds of encouragement. And always shining a positive light on astrology. It's all about vantage point.
